Deeds FAQ Answers


"Are there any liens on my property or a particular piece of property I am interested in purchasing?"


This request requires a land records search by the customer, attorney, title abstractor or a title search company. You may obtain 24 or 48 hour unlimited access to our land records through Court Express Subscriptions.

"How can I get a copy of my deed?"


To get a copy of your deed you may visit our office, use ClerkePass or obtain 24 or 48 hour unlimited access to our land records through Court Express Subscriptions.

"Can I search for properties by address?"


No. We can only search for properties by current owner name. The Wise County Commissioner of the Revenue can search for properties by address.

"How do I transfer my property to my children or someone else?"


To transfer property to someone else a new deed will be required. An attorney should be consulted to have a new deed prepared.

"How do I add someone to my deed?"


Adding someone to an existing deed will require a new deed. An attorney should be consulted to have a new deed prepared.

"Is the VLR coversheet required and where do I find it?"


The VLR coversheet is required for all land record recordings. The VLR coversheet program can be accessed online using the provided link.

Judgments


"I want to check for judgment liens against my property or me."


This request requires a judgment records search by the customer, attorney, title abstractor or a title search company. We have public use terminals that will allow customers to look up recorded judgments or you may obtain 24 or 48 hour unlimited access to our judgment lien records through Court Express Subscriptions.

"I have a judgment/lien that shows up on my credit report that has already been satisfied. What can I do to have this removed from my credit report?"


If the judgment has been satisfied and released we can provide you with a copy of the release that you can provide to the credit reporting agency. You can obtain a copy of the release by visiting our office or using the using the ClerkePass link provided on our website.

"I have a judgment that has been filed against me. How much do I owe and how do I pay it off?"


Contact the individual or company that filed the judgment against you to obtain payoff information. This office can only give payoff information on criminal judgments rendered in this Court.

"I have a judgment against me that has been satisfied but is still showing up on my credit report. The company owed is no longer in business."


If there is no assignee or successor to the judgment that can be contacted, you should contact an attorney. It may be required to file a petition with the Circuit Court to have the judgment released of record.

"How do I obtain a copy of my birth certificate?"


Contact the Division of Vital Records at (804) 662-6200 or visit their website at www.vdh.virginia.gov to obtain a copy of your birth certificate.

"How do I obtain a copy of a death certificate?"


Contact the Division of Vital Records at (804) 662-6200 or visit their website at www.vdh.virginia.gov to obtain a death certificate.

"Can I view records online?"


Yes, certain records are available for public viewing online. You may purchase access to the online records through Court Express Subscriptions.

"Does General District Court have another phone number?"


We are sorry to say that (276) 328-3426 is the only phone number for General District Court and we are unable to answer any questions concerning that court. You may visit their online case information system for general case information and to prepay tickets.

"Is there an additional fee if I pay with my credit/debit card?"


Yes, there is a 3% convenience fee added to all credit/debit card transactions.

"What are the hours of operation for the Circuit Court Clerk's Office?"

"Where do I pay my county taxes?"


County taxes are paid to the Wise County Treasurer's Office. Their telephone number is (276) 328-3666.

"Who determines the value of my property?"


The Commission of the Revenue assesses property values for the county. Their telephone number is (276) 328-3556.

"Are there any internship opportunities in the Circuit Court clerk's office?"


We do offer internship opportunities through our NASA Develop program. Interested students may complete the application process to be considered.

Marriage Licenses


"What do I need to obtain a marriage license?"

"How much does a marriage license cost?"


A marriage license costs $30.00.

Concealed Weapons Permits


"How much does a concealed weapons permit cost and how long is the permit valid?"


There is a $50 filing fee for the concealed weapons permit application. A concealed weapons permit is valid for five years. You may obtain an application from our office or by visiting the Virginia State Police's website.

"How long does it take to process a concealed weapons permit application?"


It may take up to 45 days to process your application.

"I have additional questions about concealed weapon permits. Who do I contact?"

Notary Public


"How do I become a notary public?"


You must complete the application and submit it to the Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth with the required fee. Wait for a letter of acceptance to be mailed to you, and then appear in the Wise County Circuit Court clerk's office to take the oath of office and pay $10 fee to pick up your notary commission.
